Expo 2010++ University of Hong Kong Faculty of Architecture Shanghai Study Centre

This fourth consecutive AA Shanghai Summer School will be hosted at the University of Hong Kong Faculty of Architecture Shanghai Study Centre. In this intensive nine-day studio-based course, we will investigate new computational design approaches in architecture and urbanism, within the context of Shanghai, one of the world’s most rapidly growing, emblematic twentyfirst century cities of commerce, industry and culture. This year’s subject is the 5.3-square-kilometre site currently being developed for the Shanghai 2010 Expo, focusing on proposals for the site after the six month event. We will confront the limitations of the short-term historical legacy and context of the expo, by engaging in the complexity of urbanism as a life-like, dynamic and evolutionary process. In the first stage of a two phase programme, parametric design systems will be introduced in a series of intensive presentation and tutorial sessions, as the basis for investigating information-based associative design concepts and methodologies. * e1 M6 ^/ N3 _* k

In the second stage of work, these new design and production tools will target the creation of dynamic architectural scenarios and urban models generated in relation to the Shanghai Expo site, as the test-bed for teambased comprehensive design exercises and propositions. Students will apply code-based modelling, simulation and fabrication techniques, towards multiple, variable, sequential, and recursive prototypes for a range of new cultural, commercial and civic facilities, driven by scenarios of future incremental, adaptive growth and change.

Founded in 1997, the Career Discovery Program in Architecture is a summer course organized by the Faculty of Architecture. It was set-up to promote the involvement of secondary school students in the Faculty of Architecture at the University of Hong Kong.
The three-week program comprises a series of lectures, field trips and architectural design workshops conducted by professors, practicing professionals, and staff from the Faculty of Architecture. It has two major components: the first part consists of lectures on architectural history and theory, basic drawing workshops, and guided field trips to significant architectural sites including the 2010 World Expo Shanghai site, the tour of the Shanghai World Financial Center, architecture offices, and other innovative structures. The objective is to introduce students to historical, theoretical, and practical aspects of architecture. The second component of the program consists of architectural design studios. An introduction to the culture of architectural design studios is essential to the education and learning experience of the students. The studio aims to raise students’ awareness of the hands-on and interactive nature in architectural training. A series of small design exercises is assigned to provide students with opportunities to apply the design skills and knowledge acquired during the course.

Architecture Studio Shanghai is a three-week program held at The University of Hong Kong Faculty of Architecture Study Centre, at the center of Shanghai. Taught by professors from The University of Hong Kong, as well as architects and scholars from Shanghai, the course offers participants a design studio experience within Asia’s most vibrant and fastest growing city. A fundamental element of the course is to introduce students to architectural issues and design practices, in contemporary China. The studio topic is embedded in the context of Shanghai and addresses contemporary issues in architecture and urbanism. - o' y* X6 U5 Z2 z. D# K" l
The structure of the workshop is coordinated around a studio-based core accompanied by short lecture courses covering issues in Chinese architectural history, architectural theory and computational technology. The program is taught in English. The HKU Study Centre provides state-of-the-art studio space in the heart of Shanghai. Field trips to significant architectural sites and visits to local and international design firms will provide participants with a broad view of contemporary Chinese culture, architecture and urbanism. Students work closely with the teaching staff, using the dynamic city of Shanghai as a context for understanding architecture’s role in the built environment.
